I recently read about Paolo Henrique Machado - a man who has been living in a hospital in Brazil for the last 45 years.
He got polio when he was just a baby and has been there ever since. He shares a room with a woman who also has polio, Eliana Zugli.
They need to be hooked up to respirators constantly. Because of this, they have not been able to leave the hospital very much until more recent advancements.
Despite this, he is a computer animator, and she is a published author and painter (using her mouth).
Though I cannot speak Portuguese and have not spoken with them, I get a sense of their spirits and lust for life from their art and photographs. They are both truly wondrous individuals and I'm happy to introduce them to you.
